What is the difference between a cover letter and a resume?
- The information in a cover letter relates directly to the specific job you are applying for and highlights those skills for which the employer is looking.
- The resume further elaborates what you mentioned in your cover letter.
- The information in a resume also itemizes your past and present employment and educational history.
Two Types Of Letters: Cover and Broadcast Letters
There are many different types and styles of cover letters. The two basic and most commonly used ones are the general cover letter and the broadcast letter.
Differences Between Cover and Broadcast Letters
- Cover letters are used when responding to a specific, advertised position. A broadcast letter is written when inquiring about an unadvertised position.
- The purpose of a broadcast letter is to let the employer know of your credentials and that you would like to be considered for future job openings in the company in your specified area. It is also a way to access the hidden job market, which generally is found by speaking to people in your field or industry.
- Cover letters are written for a specific position and include examples that relate directly to the skills the employer has specified in the job ad.
